African American Artist, George Herriman, Creator of the Comic Strip Krazy Kat (1913-1940)
James E. Brunson
George Herriman (1880-1940) was called "the Leonardo Da Vinci of American Comics" by another comic genius, the underground artist, Robert Crumb. The black artist was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. "Krazy Kat" got its own comic strip in 1913 and later attained widespread circulation in national syndication. It is arguably the most innovative strip in comics history.
