Album Review
Recorded in 2010, Live in Cuba showcases trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra in concert at Havana's Teatro Mella. Recorded over two nights during Marsalis' weeklong residency at the theater, the concert includes works by such Cuban artists as Chico O'Farrill, Frank Emilio, Paquito d'Rivera, Pedrito Martínez, and Celia Cruz, as well as Afro-Latin legends including Tito Puente, Ray Santos, Ray Barretto, and Jerry Gonzalez. Cuban pianist Chucho Valdés and his group the Afro-Cuban Messengers are also featured along with Marsalis and the various LCJO members. This is a dynamic two-disc collection that finds Marsalis and the LCJO celebrating the longstanding ties and creative synergy between American and Afro-Cuban jazz traditions.
