Alvin Ailey Dance Theater Returns to South Africa for First Time in 17 Years
Designated by the U.S. Congress as a vital American Cultural Ambassador to the World, the Ailey company has traveled to 71 countries to date, but it is especially meaningful when the dancers can revisit South Africa.
This September, for the first time since two historic residencies in the late 1990s after the fall of apartheid rule, the Ailey company will perform at the Teatro at Montecasino in Johannesburg (Sept 3-13) and Artscape Theatre Centre in Cape Town (Sept 16-20).
Ailey will also do extensive educational outreach in the neighboring townships and other nearby communities as part of this tour, which is supported by lead sponsor Bloomberg Philanthropies, major sponsor Bank of America Merrill Lynch, and a grant from the Ford Foundation.
